Over the past several weeks, I have been deeply engaged in developing two essential components of my innovation plan: an Alternative Professional Learning Model and a Significant Learning Environment (SLE) framework. These projects have reshaped my understanding of effective professional learning and student engagement, emphasizing continuous learning, collaboration, and real-world application.
Alternative Professional Learning: A New Approach
Traditional professional learning often consists of one-time workshops with little follow-up, leaving educators to implement new strategies without ongoing support. My Alternative Professional Learning Plan challenges this model by fostering an interactive, sustained learning experience that empowers educators. It is built around:
Continuous Engagement – Learning is an ongoing process rather than a single event.
Collaborative Learning – Educators work together, share insights, and refine their practices.
Application-Focused Training – Real-world implementation is prioritized, ensuring that learning translates into practice.
This model aligns with my innovation plan’s goal of integrating the Mightier app into emotional regulation instruction. By supporting educators through a dynamic professional learning approach, we can ensure that technology-driven SEL strategies are effectively implemented. I submitted my Alternative Professional Learning Plan on Sunday, and now it's Friday—with no grade or feedback yet. With the next project due this Sunday, I am eager for some insights before moving forward. Constructive feedback at this stage would be incredibly valuable in refining my approach.
A Significant Learning Environment (SLE) shifts the focus from passive instruction to active, student-driven learning. In my work, I have applied Fink’s 3 Column Table and the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework to design learning experiences that foster deep engagement and skill development. My approach includes:
Empowering students as co-learners – Encouraging students to take an active role in their learning process.
Integrating innovative tools like Mightier – Using biofeedback technology to help students build emotional regulation skills.
Reflection & Adaptation – Students and educators continually assess and refine their learning experiences.
Real-World Impact: Mark’s Experience with Mightier
To bring this vision to life, I am excited to share a video of my son, Mark, actively using the Mightier app. His experience highlights the real-world benefits of integrating biofeedback technology into learning environments. Through this innovation, students gain tangible tools to regulate emotions, leading to more positive interactions and improved focus in academic settings.
By combining an Alternative Professional Learning Model with a Significant Learning Environment, we can create meaningful and lasting change in education. The journey of learning never stops—for educators or students—and embracing innovation ensures that we continue to grow and evolve together.
