Regulating Emotions in the Classroom: How Mightier Builds Big Skills for Little Learners

In today’s classrooms, emotional regulation is just as essential as academic learning. Tools like Mightier, an app that uses game-based biofeedback, offer a fresh way to help young students manage their emotions effectively. In this podcast, I explore how Mightier not only supports emotional growth but also contributes to a more inclusive, emotionally supportive classroom environment. Drawing from both personal experience, including how it has impacted my son Mark, and research on emotional learning, I discuss the potential of integrating such tools into everyday classroom practices.

This podcast is a part of my broader Innovation Plan for enhancing emotional regulation in classrooms through digital tools. By addressing both emotional and academic development, my plan aims to create a learning environment that supports students holistically, ensuring they are prepared not only to succeed academically but also to manage the challenges of life.

In this podcast, I discuss how the Mightier app can be a game-changer for students’ emotional regulation. Below are some of the key resources that informed the podcast:

  • Mightier App Overview: Mightier Official Website

  • Research Articles on Emotional Regulation:

    • Ajjawi, R., Tai, J. H., Dawson, P., & Bearman, M. (2022). Conceptualising feedback as an interactional and dialogic process. Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 47(2), 183–196.

    • Stevenson, H. (2013). The social and emotional learning in education. Sage Publications.

The final draft of my publication, "Using Mightier to Improve Emotional Regulation in Students," is in the process of being submitted for review. My publication outline has already been created and is available here. Once my article is accepted, I will update this page with the final publication link.

To further support my ideas, I have provided a final publication draft that delves deeper into the themes discussed in the podcast. This draft outlines the theoretical foundations (including insights from Vygotsky, Bruner, Piaget, and Schank), practical implementation in educational settings, and strategies for integrating emotional regulation into everyday learning.

This podcast forms an integral part of my Innovation Plan, which focuses on integrating digital tools like Mightier into classrooms to foster emotional and social learning (SEL). By prioritizing emotional regulation, my goal is to create a learning environment where students are empowered to not only succeed academically but also manage their emotions and behavior in a way that enhances their overall well-being.
